Pediatric Sedation Dentistry

Some kids might need medication to help them relax or to be sedated for dental treatment. This includes children who are very anxious, have multiple dental problems, or have special health needs. Dr. Heatrice is a children’s dentist who knows how to assess the dental and behavioral support that kids require and can suggest appropriate care solutions.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Laughing Gas)

Is your child feeling a bit nervous about going to the dentist?

Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is a safe and gentle way to help your child relax during dental treatment. It creates a happy, carefree feeling, making the dental experience much less daunting for your child. After the treatment, the effects of laughing gas completely wear off within a few minutes of breathing 100% oxygen. Laughing gas sedation dentistry is a low-risk and quick-recovery option that can help your child feel calm and comfortable during their dental care.

However, it’s important to note that for extremely anxious or fearful children, or those with special healthcare needs, general anesthesia may be recommended.

General Anesthesia

Sometimes, very young children or older kids who have had a frightening dental experience might need deep or full sedation during their tooth repair to help them feel comfortable and effectively address their dental needs. Dr. Heatrice collaborates with a board-certified dental anesthesiologist who closely monitors the child throughout the procedure. After the treatment, the child will be cared for a brief period before being ready to go home with you.
